One of the threats to endangered sea turtle species is the use of nets by commercial shrimp-fishing boats. When turtles get accidentally caught in the nets, they cannot rise to the surface of the ocean to breathe, and they die. Some people suggest that this problem can be solved through an invention called a turtle excluder device (TED) that is incorporated into the nets. A TED provides a passage through which the turtles can escape. However, TEDs have been criticized for several reasons.
The reading and lecture are both about TED an excluder which is a new kind of net protects the turtle to abscond when the shrimper catches shrimp. The author of the reading feels that TED is not an innovative tech to solve the problem. However, the lecturer challenged the claim made by the author. He is on the opinion that many experts believe that TED is a good way to protect the turtle.
To begin with, the author argues that turtle catches by the shrimpers on average one turtle per boat on a month. He also mentions that the number of shrimp passes through the net is a large amount considering the turtle. The specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He states that if the number of the boat is thousand and if one boat catches one turtle then 1000 turtle per year will be endangered. He also elaborates the point by bringing that these sea turtles are rare and their population is already started to decline.
Second, the writer suggests that to shortened the time of the shrimp boat to keep the net underwater. As a result, shrimpers will get more time to release the turtle. However, the lecturer rebuts this by mentioning implementing time only applicable to the theory. He also claims that it is difficult to monitor thousands of boat when further away from the sea beach with only a few governmental workers. Moreover, before leaving for sea worker can easily examine the boat that they have the TED.
Third, some species like loggerhead and leatherback are large that they cannot escape from the standard TED. In contrast, the author position is that it is not difficult to produce larger TED. He also mentions that produce a modified TED is not a challenging task and will no longer a problem.
