TPO 39 - mass-extinction

Essay topics

Based on given materials, the article as well as the lecture discusses causes of mass extinction that was happened at the end of Triassic period. The author states that three different theories that could be responsible for the mass extinction. That being said, the lecturer provides several ideas to repudiate these theories.

Initially, the author says that based on sea levels' fluctuation, decline of sea levels may be a tangible reason for extinction. However, the lecturer explains that although in that period of time sea levels were fluctuating, it could not be a possible may for extinction. Furthermore, the lecturer explains that coastal and shallow-ocean's water were adopting to fluctuation. Beside that, this theory takes million years to be cause of extinction.

Second, the author proclaims that massive climate cooling by releasing large amounts of sulfur dioxide (SO2). Yet again, the speaker underscores that theory. She illustrates her opinion by explanation of SO2 which cannot had a sudden effect on climate. After that, the SO2 stills present in the atmosphere and it combines with water and atmosphere then falls as rain.

The final point of contention between the reading and listening passages is an asteroid strike. The author thinks an asteroid hit the Earth's surface. On the other hands, the speaker explains that there are only a few scientists have this theory. Based on, they have not found any creator of an asteroid strike. From the other viewpoint, they had found creator 20 million years before Triassic period. Thus, it cannot be a plausible reason for mass extinction.
