In the reading section, the writer contends that there are several solutions that businesses in glass production for buildings can use to prevent injuries to birds such as production of one-way glasses that is transparent in only one direction, using colorful designs on regular window glasses, and create artificial magnetic field to guide birds away from building; however, in the lecture, the professor casts doubt on the reading points by presenting some reasons and examples.
First of all, the writer claims that by replacing the regular clear glass with one-way glass which is transparent in only one direction, we can prevent the birds from flying through windows. In contrast, the professor rejects this notion by stating that one-way windows cannot act as a useful mean toward this purpose. One-way glasses act like mirrors, so birds may see the reflection of outside such as tree or sky and tempted to fly toward them. As a result, using these glasses just as bad as regular glasses because birds cannot understand them.
Furthermore, contrary to the idea in the reading part suggesting that by painting colorful lines and patterns on regular window glasses such as thin stripes we can avoid their collide with glasses, the lecturer asserts that by using these method we make some openings in glasses that can attract the birds because they cannot differentiate the regular glass with these openings. Moreover, if we limit the openings in the patterns, we may cause problems for people inside the building.
In addition, even though the writer states that by creating artificial magnetic field with using magnetic electromagnets devices we can guide the birds to stay away from buildings, the professor mentions that birds just use their magnetic field sense to travel long distances, and they use their eyes and the brightness of lights to travel short distances. Consequently, using this method is not very helpful.
