TPO-42 - Integrated Writing Task Glass is a favored building material for modern architecture, yet it is also very dangerous for wild birds. Because they often cannot distinguish between glass and open air, millions of birds are harmed every year when the

The reading and the listening passages are both about glass windows and injuries of birds. While the reading passage provides three solutions that businesses can use to prevent injuries to birds, the listening passage explains that these solutions are not effective.

First of all, the author mentions that companies can apply one-way glass to buildings. By doing these occupants of the building can see through and birds cannot see through, as a result, birds will understand that the glass forms a solid barrier and will not try to fly through it. The lecturer refutes that by saying the birds will see one-way glass as a mirror and if the mirror reflects the sky or a tree, the birds fly to it and get injured. Because of that, the professor does not agree with this solution.

Secondly, the reading passage mentions that providing a colorful design, which is thin painted strips over the glass, will help both people to see through the opening area and birds to understand that this is a building and they will avoid it. However, the lecturer stats that the birds will fly through the opening areas and if they make they cover most of the glass, the building will be dark.

Finally, the article mentions that applying a magnetic compass to building will be beneficial sine birds use it to determine their directions. On the other hand, the speaker points out that this is true, but birds use the magnetic compass in order to migrate or travel for a long distance, for example, from cold to warm weather. Also, he adds birds do not use within cities and they rely on eye and brightness of the sky. Because of that, this solution is not effective.
