The reading and the listening passages are both about Jane Austin image. While the reading passage provides three reasons that there were some paintings that Jane on it, the lecturer explains that it did not.
First of all, the writer states that Austin’s family clearly recognized Jane in a portrait. Also, it is mentioned that for over a century the family itself has endorsed the claim. The professor, however, contends it is hard to prove that she is. Also, he says Jane has been dead for 17 years. Therefore, it is hard to recognize her.
In addition, the author of the reading mentions that there are some features in Cassandra’s sketch that clearly resembles Jane. The professor cast doubt on this by saying there are a lot of relative to Jane. In fact, according to the lecturer, one of the portrait is related to Jane’s niece.
Finally, the article claims that there is evidence that the painting was painted when Austen was a teenager. Also, it is added that Austin family hired one painter who was active 1780s exactly the period when Jane was the age of the girl painting. The professor rebuts this point. He says that William (the painter) did not sell the painting in London until Austin became more than 17 years old. So, according to the lecturer, the image in the portrait is not Jane.
To conclude, the lecturer debunks the reading passage.
