The reading claims that there are large amount of fossil of agnostids which they were extinct about 450 million years ago and presents three theory about how they lived and ate. However, the speaker finds all ideas which have mentioned by reading dubious and provides some evidences to refute them all.

At the first place, the author asserts that they were free-swimming predator and killed and ate smaller prey. Although they were very small, there were smaller organism than them. In contrast, the professor underlines the fact that the free-swimming predators have large developed eyes. According to fossils, agnostids had tiny and poorly eyes and they were blind in some cases. So they could not chase pays. Also there is not any evidences which show they had other sensory organism to chase and catch prays.

Furthermore, the reading holds the view that they lived on the seafloor and had been fed by other dead organisms or bacteria like other type of primitive arthropods. On the contrary, the speakers dismisses this issue due to the fact that the animals who live on seafloor are not fast and they are localizing. They are very slowly, so they cannot swim long distances and stay in small geographic area. But the agnostids fossils spread across the world. This evidences indicate that they were very fast and swam long distant.

Finally the reading asserts that they were parasites and larger animals ate them like other modern-day arthropods such as fleas, ticks and mites. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that the parasites animals do not have a large population and have a certain limit population. Based on the evidences, there are vast of fossilized and it can show their population were large. So it can rule out of this theory.
