In the reading, the author presents 3 theories about the way in which agnostids which were primitive arthropods extincted about 450 million years ago were living. However, finding all the theories questionable and implausible, the lecturer totally repudiates them and presents some evidence to the contrary.
At first, the author argues that the agnostids may like other types of primitive arthropods have been free-swimming predators that fed on a plentitude of smaller organisms in the ancient ocean. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that all of those primitive arthropods which were free-swimming had well-developed eyes. This feature is necessary for chasing preys in the ocean. However, the agnostic had poor vision and some of them were blind. So, if they had been free-swimmer, they would have had another organ to help them chasing preys but they did not.
In addition, the reading passage holds the view that agnostids may have dwelled on the seafloors and survived there by scavenging dead organisms or by feeding on bacteria. That being said, the lecturer disputes this theory by clarifying the fact that seafloor dwellers do not have the ability to move fast or far away. They often localize an area and occupy the small geographical region. yet, the agnostids were spreaded in lar geographical areas and they also moved fast. These features are unusual for seafloor dwellers.
Finally, the author draws attention to the possibility of being parasites as the last theory about how agnostics may have lived. Yet again, the lecturer dismisses it by pointing out that parasites live in small populations. If they live in a great population, they will kill the hosts and may nudge them toward the extinction. Agnostids lived in the great size and this fact rules out the theory of parasites.
