In the reading, the author claims that the idea that Sinosauropeteryx was a feathered dinosaur only based on a fossil skeletone and the fine lines surrounding it sounds unconvincing and points out 3 reasons of support. However, finding all reasons questionable and implausible, the lecturer totally repudiates the claim and presents some evidence to the contrary.
At first, the author argues that fine lines may be corresponded to the decomposed skin fibers of the dinosaur that were misunderstood as traces of feathers. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that there is no evidence of any decomposition of skins of ther animals found in the same site. Indeed, due to the condition of volcanic ash substances such as animals' skin have been beautifully preserved.
In addition, the reading passage holds the view that the fine lines surrounding the fossil skeleton are probably remains of fossilized frills. That being said, the lecturer disputes this idea by clarifying the fact that frills and feather are chemically different. Owing to the fact that feather has batocareto but fill is bereft of this substance and also the examinations show the existence of batocareto in the fine lines, these lines must have been remains of feathers than traces of frills.
Finally, the author draws attention to the location of the fine lines were mostly located along the backbone and the tail of the dinosaur and its useless for flying and regulating internal temperature as the last point in supporting the claim. Yet again, the lecturer dismisses it by pointing out that feathers may have other functions other than flying. For example, picka has colorful feathers on its tail in order to attract opposite gender. This function is called display function and according to a study which showed this dinosaur has orange and white feathers, it probably benefited from the display function of its feather.
