In the reading, the author claims that a European silver coin found in 1957 in the state of Main is not a genuine historical evidence and it did not bring to North America by Norse actually it was recently placed at the site by someone. The author supports the claim by pointing out 3 reasons of support. However, finding all reasons questionable and implausibe, the lecturer totally repudiates it and presents some evidence to the contrary.
At first, the author argues that there is a great distance, more than a thousand kilometers, between the site in Maine where the coin was excavated and the Norse settlements. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea this far distance does not refute the gunuinety of the coin. Owing to the fact that there are many other objects found in Maine which were originally belonged to far distance regions. Native American could reach North America and gain the silver coins from the Norse and then bring back to the Manie.
In addition, the reading passage holds the view that the fact that there is no other coins found at the Canadian sites corroborate the idea that the Norse did not bring any silver coins to America. That being said, the lecturer disputes the idea by clarifying the fact that European packed all the objects which they brought with them to North America and moved them back to Europe when they returned home.
Finally, the author draws attention to the fact that although silver coins may have been used in Europe, they were actually useless in North America. If European could not use the coins in America, why they would have brought them America?. Yet again, the lecturer dismisses it by pointing out that silver coins may have other functions other than money. These coins were very appealing and their beauty could be useful for European in North America. For example, they could use them in neckless or other pieces of jewelry or also use them in trades.
