TPO-43 - Integrated Writing Task Agnostids were a group of marine animals that became extinct about 450 million years ago. Agnostid fossils can be found in rocks in many areas around the world. From the fossil remains, we know that agnostids were primitiv

The article states that paleontologists did not determine with the use of Agnostic's fossils information about: what they ate and how they behaved. The reading defines the Agnostics as a group of marine animals that became extinct millions of years ago. It also provides some different theories about how Agnostics lived. However, the professor in the lecture explains that each of the theories explained in the article has some serious weakness; as a result, he refutes each of the paleontologist's theories.

First, the article claims that the Agnostics may have been a free-swimming predator, who hunted smaller animals that were in the ancient ocean. On the other hand, the professor refutes this point, and he says that other Agnostics lived in the open ocean and had well-developed eyes to hunt. But, the smaller Agnostic animals had smaller eyes, and they could be blind; as a result, they could not prey on other ocean species.

Second, the article explains that Agnostics may have dwelled on the seafloor because other types of primitive animals lived that way too; they would have eaten dead organisms or some bacteria. The professor challenges this theory by explaining that animals that live in the seafloor move fast, and that they are large, so the small animals like the small Agnostic which moved slowly and lived in some specific areas could not have lived in the seafloor.

Finally, the reading indicates that Agnostics were parasites, and they were living on and feeding off large organisms. Nevertheless, the professor casts doubt on this theory; he explains that parasite populations are smaller and limited because they can kill all the organisms that they can use to live off. In addition, the professor says that because of the vast amount of Agnostics fossil found, this last theory that presents the idea that those small animals were parasites is unlikely to be true.
