TPO-45 - Integrated Writing TaskDid bees (a type of insect) exist on Earth as early as 200 million years ago? Such a theory is supported by the discovery of very old fossil structures that resemble bee nests. The structures have been found inside 200- mi

The article is about a theory of the existence of bees as early as 200 million years ago. This theory is explained by the discovery of fossil structures that resemble bee nests. However, the passage explains that many skeptics doubt that the fossil structures were created by bees and provides some arguments. On the contrary, the professor in the lecture explains that the reasons in the passage are not convincing.

First, the article states that no fossils of actual bees have been found from 200 million years ago. Likewise, the professor explains that the fossil would not be preserved from that time, but he states that fossil trees from 200 million years ago lack a right resin to preserve the fossil; however, it does not mean that the bees could not exist in the past. As a result, the professor shows that bees could exist as long as 200 million years ago.

Secondly, the article claims that absence of flowering plants is another reason that shows why bees did not exist in that period of time. It also states that bees and flowering plants have a biological relationship. On the other hand, the professor explains that bees could feed on plants without flowers, such as pine trees. In addition, he explains that once the flowering plants evolved in that period, bees could adapt to the new conditions. Therefore, the professor refutes the point about the absence of flowering plants as a reason why bees did not exist 200 million years ago.

Finally, while the article explains that structures lack some details that resemble a bee’s nest, the professor, in the other hand, says that there is a chemical evidence that supports the presence of bees from that period. For example, he says that a chemical that brings water protection is an evidence that was found in the fossil. The most important evidence is that the same water material is present today in bees’ nests. As a consequence, the professor clearly explains why this last reason explained in the passage is unlikely to be true.
