TPO 44- In 1957 a European silver coin dating to the eleventh century was discovered at a Native American archaeological site in the state of Maine in the United States. Many people believed the coin had been originally brought to North America by European explorers known as the Norse, who traveled across the Atlantic Ocean and came into contact with Native Americans almost a thousand years ago.
However, some archaeologists believe that the coin is not a genuine piece of historical evidence but a historical fake; they think that the coin was placed at the site recently by someone who wanted to mislead the public. There are three main reasons why some archaeologists believe that the coin is not genuine historical evidence.
The reading and lecture are both about the discovery of European silver coin in an archaelogical site in Maine, United States. The author of the reading believes that the artifact found in Maine has no genuine historical value. However, the lecturer casts doubts about the claims made in the article, saying that the coin were not fake and its a real representation of genuine evidence from Norse when they came in contact with North America.
First of all, the author points out that distance from Norse settlement are far from where the coin is discovered. The article notes that the distance from Canada and North America are thousand kilometers away from each other and there are no connection with the settlement. Conversely, the point is challenged by the lecturer. She says that many objects from North America came from other far places. Furthermore, she argues that Native American travel great distance and it is possible to acquire different possessions from their travel. In addition, when they reach the settlement of Norse in Canada they can get the coin and bring it back to Maine.
Secondly, the author contends that there are no other coins found at the place where Norse inhabited. The article establishes that they did not bring the silver coins to their expedition in North America. On the contrary, the lecturer rebuts this argument. She suggests that Norse has no permanent settlement and they pack up all their valuables including the silver coins. Moreover, she elaborates on this by mentioning that they brought the coins with them and travel back to Europe. Thus, this standpoint contradicts the passage.
Finally, the author states that there is no purpose for Norse to bring silver coins to their travel to North America. The article denotes that Norse are aware that Native Americans did not know silver coin has monetary value. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that silver coins will be appealing to the Americans and can make it as jewelry and necklace. She puts forth the idea that silver were interesting and beautiful and can easily trade with other materials. As a result, the last theory does not stand up.
