The passage discusses the possibility of bees existing as long as two hundred million years ago. The theory is suggested by the discovery of fossil structures that look like what we call bee nests in the modern world. There are, however, people who are skeptical of the conclusiveness of the evidence that suggests there existed bees at such an early period. The lecture poses a counter-argument that tries to convince the listeners that the skeptics are in fact wrong and that bees truly existed around two hundred million years ago.

The skeptics of this theory have several arguments, three of which are highlighted in the passage. The first is lack of existence of fossilized bees from that time, which the speaker tries to prove wrong by stating that this argument is essentially incomplete and unconvincing. The speaker states that most of the fossil preservation from the past and especially near trees depends on special tree resins that used to be rare two hundred million years ago. As a result, the speaker argues that perhaps the reason why there are no fossil remnants of bees from that time is that there were no sufficient resins available to preserve those fossils.

Another argument that the speaker tries to counter in the lecture is that the absence of flowering plants two hundred million years ago is convincing evidence that bees did not exist at that time since modern bees are exclusively dependent on the flowers of the flowering plants and have evolved a close and dependent relationship with flowering plants. The speaker tries to convince the audience that bees could have existed before flowering plants did, and that they could have been dependent upon non-flowering plants that existed two hundred million years ago. She argues that it is entirely possible that as later, in the following periods, flowering plants came to exist, the bees developed a relationship with them and this relationship eventually evolved to be the inseparable relationship that existed in between flowering plants and bees in the modern world.

The final argument that the lecture addresses and opposes is likely the most convincing one. The speaker argues that while current nests lack the caps over the chambers, there is ample proof that the bees have built the chambers. The chambers that exist in modern-day bee nests contain a distinctive chemical matter that is possibly exclusive to these chambers and is made by bees. The study of the chemical structure of the nests found from two hundred million years ago also reveal that the chambers of those nests contain that distinctive chemical, and therefore are made by no other insects than bees.
