The reading and the lecture are both about the theory that many animals of the past were much larger than they are today. The author of the reading uses three main points to support this theory, whereas, the lecturer casts doubt on the points made in the reading. He thinks that the theory is wrong.
First of all, the author points out that the large size of past animals can be explained by the great content in oxygen in the ancient atmosphere, in fact, reputable biologist hold that oxygen stimulates growth in animals. The lecturer challenges this point by saying that the in addition to oxygen there were present other gases too, which made difficult to breathe and also there was not a lot of oxygen available as the reading states.
Secondly, the author contends that abundant plant life provided plenty of high nutrient food for animals on the early earth. The lecturer contrasts the point by rebutting that the vast amount of vegetation present in the past was low nutrient food as an ancient plant fossil has shown.
Finally, the third point made by the author is that the warm climate of early earth tended to stimulate growth because animals could invest the extra energy in growth rather than to stay warm. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that small species are found in areas with a warm climate, and the warmer is the climate the more the energy is spent by metabolism, and also they need more food to sustain their self and the evidence of today earth’s animals supports all of this.
