Humans have long been fascinated by elephants, the largest land animal in the modern world. Social animals that live in herds, elephants are native to both Africa and Asia. Their large ears, long trunk, and long life span have made elephants one of the most captivating creatures on Earth. Our long-standing interest in elephants has led to several beliefs about surprising elephant behaviors.
The reading passage discusses several fascinating facts about elephants' behaviors. However, the lecturer finds the ideas dubious and casts doubt on the reasons provided by the reading.
First, the author claims that according to some behaviors such as breaking away from their herds, old elephants can realize that their death is approaching. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that the fact that elephants break away from their herds is not merely due to the fact that their death is near. The practical reason for this issue is that old elephants have difficulty chewing plants. As a result, they leave their herds in search of softer plants which are typically found near lakes. Since they spend the rest of their life there, they would die there as well.
Furthermore, the reading holds the view that elephants have a special ability to paint drawings representing the world around them. On the contrary, the professor underlines the fact that although these animals are able to hold a paintbrush on their trunk, they move the brush not just because they have a special talent. In fact, the brush movement is the response to the stimulation of people who touch their ears with certain patterns and try to train them. Therefore, their paintings are just some response to human's encouraging and the drawings are just some lines rather than drawings of objects like flowers.
Finally, the passage asserts that elephants are afraid of mice which is confirmed by recent scientific research. In contrast, the speaker dismisses the issue due to the fact that the reason explaining elephants' fear is not because of the size of mice. Their fear is related to the fact that they are not familiar with mice when they first observe them. To illustrate, in zoos elephants are not afraid of mice at all since they have frequently seen them and they know that they cause no harm to them.
