TPO-53 - Integrated Writing Task

Recently, there has been a debate about whether or not the paying of high taxes for purchasing cigarettes and unhealthy products are useful. The author thinks that rising taxes have some social benefits, whereas the lecturer believes that the arguments about the benefits can be challenged. Both the author and the professor provide their ideas to support their points which I will discuss below.

First, the writer states that raising taxes on cigarettes leads smokers to buy less, and smoking decreased as taxes on tobacco increased. He adds more by saying that will help to make a healthier community. He expects that imposing similar taxes on unhealthy products like food and beverages would decrease obesity. On the other hand, the professor challenges this point. He states that lead to unhealthy behavior because smokers might buy the low quality of cigarettes consequently more harmful. He explains more his idea by saying that, the people's behavior would be the same for other unhealthy products.

Secondly, the article claims that It is fair financially for others who not involved in unhealthy behavior. He elaborates more his idea by saying that when the smoker gets sick that increase the medical costs which unfair for others who no involved in bad behavior. The professor contradicts this point. He states that, although it might be fair for those who involved in an unhealthy situation, it does not take into account the personal income. He gives example to support his idea mentioning the high and low-income smokers both are an addict to cigarettes, and it is unfair for the low-income person to pay the same taxes as the high-income one.

Finally, The author mentions the high rate of taxation help the government to provide more benefits for the public like building stadiums, parks, and support education. The mentor defeats this claim. He states that can have a downside, The government can depend on the taxes revenue only. He elaborates more and says the government should find another way to overcome unhealthy behaviors such as banning smoking in parks or in public or indoor and outdoor.

Conclusion, the passage, and the lecture are both about the high taxes on unhealthy products lead social benefits. Both are contradicted each by providing their ideas and examples.
