TPO-53: taxes on cigarettes

In the reading, the author claims that there are some viable hypotheses about being benefit high taxes on cigarettes and other unhealthy products by pointing 3 reasons for support. However, finding all the ideas questionable and implausible, the lecturer totally repudiates the claim and presents some evidence to the contrary.

At first, the author argues that taxes cause a negative sense to buy cigarettes. It is most likely the taxes diminish the death rate, which depends on cigarettes. Conversely, the lecturer holds the view that the high taxes do not aid to drop the cigarette smoking. According to her, if the people find out a high price for the cigarettes, they continue to buy even more due to they want to get more experience.

In addition, the reading passage brings up that the idea that the high taxes are fair for people who smoke cigarettes because the persons become a sickness in the future and as a result, the governments have to spend high money for healing them. It should be noted that it must be a difference between the healthy person and person who smoke the cigarettes. On the other hands, the lecturer disputes the point by clarifying this fact that the high taxes are not fair. According to the lecturer, although the high taxes are paid by a small population of the society (wealthy people), the large group or ordinary people do not have sufficient incomes for the high taxes.

Finally, the author asserts that governments benefit from the high taxes as the last point for supporting the issue. The taxes are spent on building stadiums and a lot of things which are useful for the people. The lecturer, though, dismisses it by point out that the taxes give more money for the governments which dislike prohibiting the cigarettes smoking in social places or parks.
