TPO 54. The Salton Sea in California is actually a salty inland lake. The level of salt in the lake's water—what scientists call its salinity—has been increasing steadily for years because the lake's water is evaporating faster than it is being repla

A serious problem has been arising in Salton Sea in California- the salinity. As the water evaporating rate become higher than the replacing rate of the rainfall or rivers, the salinity of the lake increases and will soon to be unable to support fish and bird populations. The article provides three solutions to decrease the salinity while the lecturer disagrees with them. The disadvantages of the ideas were pointed out by the lecturer.

First, the article suggests to set up the desalinatin facilities which function by heating the water to turn into steam and exclude the salt and other materials. Though the desalination system can lower the sliity of the lake, the lecturer concerns that the solid materials be excluded by the system will pose a serious threat to human beings once the wind blow the toxic materials into the air and be absorbed by human. Therefore, it is not an ideal way to construct the desalination system before we come up with the solution to deal with the toxic materials.

Second, in the lecturer's opinion, it is impossible for the givernment to spend a huge money to set up a thousand-meter-long pipeline to transport the water from ocean and dilute the water in the lake.

Third, the reading passage provides the idea to construct some walls to divide the lake into several sections and conrol the salinity of each section. However, the lecturer indicate that some situations may happen to make the walls be destroyed such as the earthquakes, and all the efforts will be vanished if the walls are cracked and the water will be mixed up.
As a result, the lecturer disagrees with the ideas provided in the reading passage, and the salinity problem still need to be solved with better ideas.
