TPO 54 Writing Integrated
The Salton Sea in California is actually a salty inland lake. The level of salt in the lake's water—what scientists call its salinity—has been increasing steadily for years because the lake's water is evaporating faster than it is being replaced by rainfall or rivers. If the trend continues, the lake's water will soon become so salty that the lake will be unable to support fish and bird populations. The lake would then become essentially a dead zone. Fortunately, there are several ways to reverse the trend that is threatening the lake's health.

The reading passage proposes several suggestions to help modify the increasing trend of the Salton Sea's salinity which is threatening the lake's life. However, the lecturer finds the ideas dubious and casts doubt on the reasons provided by the reading.

First, the author claims that the removal of lake water's salt using special desalination facilities would reduce the level of water salt. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that desalination of water in this way presents some problems. For instance, although the facilities can remove salt, during the desalination process, they may leave behind solid materials which may cause serious health problems for people, like Selenium which is, in fact, a toxic material and if it is spread in the air by the wind and eventually the people breathe it, they face serious problems.

Furthermore, the reading holds the view that the ocean water which contains less salt can be transported into the lake by pipelines or canals. On the contrary, the professor underlines the fact that the method needs a large amount of investment which probably is not practical since local governments may not be able to pay for constructing hundreds of kilometers of pipelines. In other words, building such systems requires constructing pipes over long distances which is really expensive.

Finally, the reading passage asserts that by building a system of walls which divide the lake into sections, the salinity of the lake could be controlled. In contrast, the speaker dismisses the issue due to the fact that although the method could be helpful in the short term, it would not bring about durable results. Since the lake is located in a location where the geological activity is high, there might be some earthquakes which damage the constructed walls. Therefore, after an earthquake, the walls will be collapsed, and the water from the main section will be mixed with water from other parts.
