TPO 55 Device to help trees grow and fight desertification

The passage talks about a novel device created to help grow trees and stop desertification. According to the text, this box-shaped device surrounds the young tree, collects water by condensing from the vapor in the atmosphere, and helps the tree to grow. Although the device is beneficial in fighting desertification, some scientists cast doubt on its applicability, which the passage lists. However, the professor disagrees with the text and believes the negative points mentioned about the device are not convincing enough and it is worthwhile to consider its usage.

First, the reading states the high cost of buying these devices is a discouraging factor for countries to invest in them. On the other hand, the professor points out that these devices can be reused at least 20 times. Once the tree grows big, the device can be removed and used to support a new sapling. Therefore, if the cost of the device is divided by all the possible trees a single device can be used for, it can be concluded that they are not as expensive as first thought.

Second, the passage mentions that it is difficult to motivate local people to install and maintain the devices if they do not directly provide people with food or other benefits. Contrary to this idea, the professor believes that such devices can provide the locals with enough incentives to persuade them in installing the devices. For example, the water collected by the device can be used for a variety of other plants such as vegetables. Additionally, once the tree grows, local people can harvest tree branches for firewood. So, it is apparent that there would be enough motivations for the locals to tend to these devices.

Third, the text brings the limit of the devices in providing enough water for outgrown trees as a liability for their usage. It is written that once the tree grows too big for the device to sustain, the tree might not be able to survive in harsh desert conditions. Conversely, the professor illustrates that these devices are designed to help trees survive on their own by giving an example of an overwhelming number of trees cultivated using the devices that were able to survive for at least two years after the removal of the device. She mentions that trees in deserts grow deep roots that help them reach underground water resources. Once the tree reaches this source of water, it will not have to depend on the device to continue its survival.
