Both reading and lecture are talking about how bird population got affected by human population. The reading says that increased human population decreased bird population. In contrary, the lecture disagrees. It says that the reasons stated in the reading are unconvincing.
First, the reading states that as human population and settlement continue to expand, bird's natural habitats continue to disappear. For example, people use forests, wetlands and grasslands to build homes, malls and offices. As a result, the areas suitable for birds living are decreasing. Yet, the lecturer doesn't agree. She says that urban life has bad impact on some types of birds, but it also has a good one on other types. For example, now we can easily see pigeons on streets of cities, and seagulls as well. Number of hooks and folks are increased as they feed on died pigeons and rodents.
Second, the reading says that birds’ population in rural areas continue to decrease as wilderness areas are converted to agricultural use. For further illustration, as human population increase, more crops are needed. As a result more agricultural areas are needed and more wilderness areas are used for this purpose. However, the lecture disagrees. It states that now less agricultural land are used. New techniques are introduced to increase the crop production per unit land. No need to destroy the original habitats (wilderness areas) of the birds.
Third, the reading claims that pesticides have a negative effect on birds’ population. As it is explained, pesticides go indirectly into water and food chain of birds. Sometimes birds can die from eating poisoned insect or drinking contaminated water. Other times birds lose the reproduction capabilities as a result of being in contact directly or indirectly with pesticides. On the other hand, the lecture opposes this. It states that people are aware of the possible consequences of pesticides. They developed two new techniques to overcome this issue. First, using new less toxic pesticides. Second, using more pest resistance crops which are not attracting to pests.
