In this set of materials, the reading passage discusses that some of the elephants' behaviors are so unusual and surprising. While in the listening the professor casts doubt on what is presented in the text and believes that these superstitions about unnatural abilities of elephants are the result of the misunderstanding of their behaviors.
First and all, in the text, it is clearly mentioned that old elephants are aware of their death, because they leave their herd to death alone. However, the professor claims that it is not acceptable evidence to prove that they are aware of their death. Old elephants have thin teeth. So, they leave the herd to find smoother vegetation to eat, and these kinds of vegetation can be found near water.
In addition, the professor disagrees with this idea that elephants have artistic ability. She says that they can hold brush paint because they have learned to do it. Elephants have very sensitive ears that human use it to train them. Moreover, they are able to learn to paint some simple lines, nonetheless, they are not aware of the meaning this paint.
Finally, in the text, it is stated that elephants fear of mice. The professor subscribes that only elephants which are not familiar with mice fear from them. Thus, their fear is the consequence of their unfamiliarity. However, elephants in the zoo do not fear of mice.
