TPO test30 burning mirror

TPO- test30- burning mirror

The article states that there are several reasons to suspect that in a war between Roman and Greek, the Greeks defended themselves with a weapon called a burning mirror, and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor explains that the claims in the reading are not convincing, and she refuses each of the author's reasons.
First, the reading claims that the technology for manufacturing a large sheet of copper that would be able to produce fire did not exist in ancient time. The professor challenges this point by saying that there was not need to use only one single mirror. It is possible that they used many small flat pieces of copper together to arrange a parabolic shape mirror. With the current knowledge, it would possible for them to use dozen mirrors with parabolic shape and set ships on fire.
Second, the article posits that burning mirror is just a myth because it would have taken a long time to set the ships on fire, and it is supported by an experiment. However, the professor explains that the experiment had a problem, and the problem was that they assumed that the ships were made only with wood. This assumption caused them to conclude that it took a long time. The professor states that Romans used a sticky substance named pitch in their ships that catch fire quickly in only a few seconds. Therefore, after catching fire by this substance the wood parts of the ship would catch fire, and it is possible even if the ships were not unmoving.
Third, the reading states that burning mirror was a myth because it does not seem like an improvement on a weapon that Greeks already had: flaming arrow. The professor opposes this point by saying that Roman was familiar with flaming arrows; therefore, they might watch to avoid it. On the other hand, they did not aware of the burning mirrors. Hence, burning mirrors would be much surprising, and more effective than flaming arrows.
