TPO13- Question : Summarise the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they case doubt on specific points made in the reading passage.

The lecture and the reading are both about private collectors who sell and buy fossils. The author believes that are three reasons to avoid this actions made by the private collectors. The lecture, however, challenges the claims made by the author. She is of the opinion that these explanations are faulty.

To begin with, the author points out that the sale and purchase making it for the public to see fossils can lead to a decline in public interest in fossils. This specific argument is refuted by the lecture. She argues that fossils which have been selling for privative collectors provide for public museums a change to display more fossils. Hence, she thinks that the public will not suffer, but they will have more advantages from these actions.

Secondly, the writer posits that private collectors will decrease access of scientists to fossils. In contrast, the lecture says that each fossils need to be analyzed by some scientists to identify the age and value of the fossils. For this reason, she shows the opinion that the access of fossils to scientists will not diminish.

Finally, the reading suggests that commercial fossil collectors often destroy valuable scientific evidence. Also, the author points out that most commercial fossil collectors are untrained or uninterested in carrying out the careful field work and documentation. In the other hand, the lecture explains that is better discover new fossil than never discover them.

In a nutshell, although the reading and the lecture are both about private fossil collectors, the three main points made in the reading are effectively refused by the lecture.
