tpo21 task 1

The reading and the lecture are both about planting genetically modified trees. While the author of the article believes that it has several benefits, the lecturer disputes the claims made in the article.
First, the reading states that genetically altered trees are more resistant than real equivalents. This specific argument is challenged by the professor. She says that genetically modified plants are more resistant than natural plants in a specified condition. Additionally, she points out that modified plants are much more uniform than natural plants. Considering this fact, if a change occurs in their environment, like climate change, all the altered plants will be eradicated.
Second, the author suggests that genetically altered trees economically benefit the people who grow them. In the article, it is said that modified trees enable farmers to get faster and greater returns on their farming investment and save on pesticides too. The lecturer, however, asserts that there is a hidden cost associated with altered trees. The professor claims that companies charge three times more for genetically changed trees. Also, she goes on to say that farmers cannot collect seeds from the modified plants. Therefore, they have to pay the related companies every time they want to plant.
Third, the reading claims that using altered plants can prevent the overuse of wild trees, which satisfies the need for wood and saves the native trees. The professor opposes this point by explaining that these altered trees cause more damage to local wild trees. Because modified plants are among natural trees, she says that altered trees grow aggressively and endanger wild trees by exhausting their resources like water and soil.
As you can see, the author and lecturer hold very different views on planting genetically modified trees.
