Both the reading passage and the lecture discuss the idea that the fine lines that have been found near the sinosauropteryx are remnants of feathers. With this in mind, the reading states that there are several reasons to contradict this hypothesis. The professor, on the other hand, refutes all three episodes of arguments mentioned in the reading, believing that none of them are convincing.
First, the writer argues that it is more likely to consider those fine pattern as trace of skin decomposition after the sinosauropteryx death. Conversely, the professor makes it clear that remnants of other animals have founded in the same site which well preserved and had no evidence of skin decomposition. Thus, it is more likely to assume those fine lines as trace of feathers.
Second, the reading content puts forth the idea that the lines are much likely to be the sinosauropteryx’s frills. However, the speaker contradicts this claim and states that frill and feather have different chemical composition. The feather consist of a kind of protein which is not available in frill. She continues that the result of analyses could prove that the fine lines are likely to be feathers rather that frills.
Finally, the author points the view that those fine lines seem to be useless in flight and body heat regulation, since they were located in the back of the sinosauropteryx. On the other hand, the lecturer illustrates that feathers are not just for fly or thermoregulation and could be used as mate attraction method, in a way some birds do. since the analyses have represented trace of white and orange color in the remnants of the lines, it is strongly possible that of sinosauropteryx used feathers in order to display.
