The main idea of the both the reading passage and the lecture is the claim of Peary to have reached the north pole in 1909. With this in mind, the reading states that there are several stronge reasons to support his truth. The lecturer, on the other hand, refutes all three episodes of arguments mentioned in the reading, believing that there are not solid evidence and those reasons are not convincing.

First, the writer argues that a committe of National Geographic Society held to evaluate his records and equipments. The committee declared he had reached the north pole at the claimed date. Conversely, the professor makes it clear that members of the committe were his close friends and those invested on his work. Hence, it seems that their conclusion biased.

Second, while the reading argues that some recent expeditions, for instance Tom Avery, reached the north pole in less than 37 days by using the same equipment, the speaker contradicts this reason. In this case, he discribes that the conditions of Tom Avery and Peary expeditions were not same. As a result, we can't accept Peary's claim just by investigating Avery expedition.

Finally, both the text and the listening materials discuss the analysis of photos Peary taked and now are available. In this case, the author explains that the Sun's position in the Ny can be calculated by alaysis of the shadow in the photos. The result of this analysis strongly proves that he reached the north pole and tooked the photos by himself. Howevere, the professor mentions that those photos not prove any things. he continues that the used camera was primitive and the photos fade over time and look blured. So it cannot be used to measure the Sun's position.
