Both the reading passage and the lecturer discuss a debate put forth on whether or not the lines on Sinosauropteryx’ bones implicate that the creature had feathers. The reading passage claims, by bringing forward three arguments, that it is unlikely for that Sinosauropteryx had feathers. The lecturer, however, finds the arguments presented in the reading passage implausible and presents some compelling arguments to refute them all.

First, the author argues that the fine lines have been formed after the animal's death because of decomposition of its skin when exposed to volcanic ash. Conversely, the professor brings up the fact that analysis conducted on other animals of the site where Sinosauropteryx is found disproves this argument; evidence shows that no other buried animal is found with its skin decomposed the way the reading discusses - all body parts of animals of the site are well preserved.

Second, the reading contends that even if the lines are not made as a result of skin decomposition, there is a possibility that they were remnants of fines (the body parts which were merely served as ornaments). In contrast, the lecturer underlies the fact that if the lines were signs of the existence of fines, they must have been devoid of some special chemicals that know exist in the spots.

Finally, the reading passage asserts that the functions of a feather are maintaining body temperature and flying since the feathers are located along the backbone and tail of Sinosauropteryx, they cannot be attributed to flying and regulating internal temperature. On the contrary, the speaker dismisses this issue due to the fact that there are animals which have colorful feathers solely for display function. Since it is revealed that Sinosauropteryx had colorful feathers too, it is likely that they also used them for display.
