Both the reading and the lecture are discussing carved stone balls, which date from the Neolithic period, found in Scotland. The reading passage proposes three probable theories about the purpose and meaning of these balls. However, the professor suggests that none of the theories are convincing.
To begin with, the author claims that it was possible that these balls were used as a weapon in hunting or fighting. However, the professor refutes this theory by explaining that ancient hunting weapons like arrows or hand axes showed signs of ware which these balls lack. Furthermore, Although many of these balls are cracked and pieces of them are broken, their surfaces are really well-preserved and have not been damaged. Therefore, the balls could not be used as a weapon
Secondly, the reading passage suggests that since these balls are all at the same size, they might have been used for measuring or weighting. In contrast, this theory is challenged by the professor's position that despite being at the same size, these balls varied significantly in their weights. The balls were made up of different stones every of which has a different density. As a result, it is less likely that these balls were used as a measure.
Finally, the last point of the reading states that these balls might serve a social purpose and represent the social status of their owner. Nevertheless, the professor casts doubt on this suggestion by explaining that this can not be the main purpose of these balls for two reasons. First, some of the balls have really simple designs carved on them, which is too simple to look like a status. The other thing is that in the past when people died, everything belonged to them buried with them in their tombs. However, none of the balls have been found in tombs. As a result, it is not true to think that the major use of the balls was this.
