TPO54 Integrated Writing

Both the reading and the passage discuss about how to support the life of fishes and birds in The Salton Sea, but the speaker casts doubt on the standpoint in the reading that there're three practical ways to solve salinity problem.

The reading first claims that heating water and evaporating it will remove salt from water and when water cool down will be salt-free water. The speaker refutes that this way will cause many problems like health risk. For instance, when water evaporates, there maybe some toxic chemical into the air and people's health will be hurt if they breath it in.

Furthermore, the reading conceives that they can dilute salt by constructing pipelines and canals to bring the sea water into the lake. Contrary to the belief in the reading, the speaker asserts that the sea is 100km away from the lake, so the construction may cost a big amount of resources and the government may not have enough money to pay.

Finally, while the reading claims that constructing walls to divide the lake and keep large and main sections' salinity reducing with allowing small sections' salinity to grow might do great help, the speaker disagrees since there are many geological activities in this area and the walls can only last a small period of time and will be collapsed due to frequent earthquakes. Therefore, the reading has been contradicted again.
