In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay in order to do so. A mandatory policy requiring companies to offer their employees the option of working a four-day workweek for four-fifths (80 percent) of their normal pay would benefit the economy as a whole as well as the individual companies and the employees who decided to take the option.
The shortened workweek would increase company profits because employees would feel more rested and alert, and as a result, they would make fewer costly errors in their work. Hiring more staff to ensure that the same amount of work would be accomplished would not result in additional payroll costs because four-day employees would only be paid 80 percent of the normal rate. In the end, companies would have fewer overworked and error-prone employees for the same money, which would increase company profits.
For the country as a whole, one of the primary benefits of offering this option to employees is that it would reduce unemployment rates. If many full-time employees started working fewer hours, some of their workload would have to be shifted to others. Thus, for every four employees who went on an 80 percent week, a new employee could be hired at the 80 percent rate.
Finally, the option of a four-day workweek would be better for individual employees. Employees who could afford a lower salary in exchange for more free time could improve the quality of their lives by spending the extra time with their families, pursuing private interests, or enjoying leisure activities.
Question: Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on specific points made in the reading passage.
The reading and the lecture are both about offering employees the option of a four-day work week, which could be of great benefit for both employers and employees. Whereas the author of the reading states that this will benefit the economy, companies and employees who decided to take this option, the lecturer suggest that this decision will affect companies profit, the life of employees and economic conditions in other ways. The lecturer cast doubt on the main points made in the reading passage by providing three reasons.
To begin with, the reading passage states that company profit will increase because employees who work less time would feel more rested and alert and this will produce less errors at work and no additional payroll costs because no knew staff will be hired to do the same amount of work. However, the lecturer refutes this argument by saying that companies will be forcing to spend more dollars in providing training and medical benefits coverage for their employees because they will have to hire more employees, will need more office space and more computers. The lecturer argues this point by saying that this eventually cut off the company profits.
Secondly, according to the reading, the unemployment rates will diminish and as a result new employee could be hired to do the work for the remaining hours. The lecturer disputes this point by saying that because hiring new workers is costly, companies will have to ask their employees to work overtime to make up the difference. The lecturer argues that as a result, no additional jobs will be create and jobs will eventually become more unpleasant.
Finally, the reading passage claims that employee quality of life will improve because they will spend more time with their families, will enjoy leisure activities and will pursue private or personal interests. The lecturer argues this point by emphasizing that this will come up with some risks as well. He says that because of this "more free time", job abilities will decrease and those employees who decided to work four days will be the first to lose their jobs during an economy downturn and might not receive promotions. Moreover, the lecturer says that companies preferred a five-day work employee for management tasks who can supervise the job during the entire work week.
