the veracity of stories about Bredan's voyage
Both the reading and the lecture are about the accuracy of the stories presented in the old manuscripts regarding the Brendan's travel to North America. In this vein, the passage has presented three arguments to support the validity of the stories. On the other hand, the professor is not convinced of this and casts doubt on each of the theories presented in the passage. Having categorically rejected the arguments, he is of the opinion that none of these theories are precise and valid.
To begin with, the author argues that the stories has eluded to the places that the crew has visited during their voyage. Accordingly, Brendan's crew had visited several islands in order to avoid hazards of a prolong voyage on the sea. This argument is challenged by the professor. According to the speaker, the story posits that one of the places is Faroe island owing to the evidence of ships. However this cannot be true because ships also could have been raised in other places. Moreover, the lecture states that burning hills cannot specifically refer to the island mentioned in the story merely because of the active volcano that exist in this place; however it could have referred to hills that people set fire on them.
Secondly, the reading states that a team of researchers has made a copy of the Curraghs that Brendan has traveled with it to illustrate the possibility of their travel by this mean. Contrastly, the professor's stance is that this was not a precise copy of their Curraghs since it was longer which is respectively more powerful and possess more sails. Therefore, the lecturer is of the opinion that this more powerful boat may be capable of traveling 8000 km even if the smaller boat of Brendan could had not.
Finally, the passage mentions associate the discovery of old marking resembling the alphabet called ogham in the Brendan' time to their voyage. On the other hand, the professor opposites this notion by asserting that merely some of the markings resemble the ogham. Then, the speaker put forth to the idea that since these marking contains images of sun and other objects, and the ogham was totally consisted of alphabets, so, the markings do not contributes to ogham. He posits that they may be scratched by native American who used to curve pictures on the stones.
