the zebra mussel
The reading proposes that the zebra mussel influence in the new environment and it is harmful to it. However, the lecturer finds all the ideas dubious and presents some evidence to refute them all.
The author argues that due to the fact that the zebra brings to the USA by ships. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that that the population of zebra mussel did not control in the past when people had no enough knowledge .however, nowadays it can be stopped the shipping which carries them. for example, ships that travel across the ocean and empty to the north of the USA, they need fresh water which refills with ocean water. The ocean water can kill the zebra mussel.
Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that they dominate in a new habitat and have no predators. On the contrary, the professor underlines the fact that it is true only at the beginning when the zebra mussels place in the new environment. Local birds can change their habit in their foods and switch to the zebra mussels. Hence, the zebra mussel is no dominant after that.
Finally, the reading asserts that they cause the population of fish overall to decline through competing for food sources with plankton eater fish. In contrast, the speaker dismisses this issue due to the fact that it is true they have a negative effect on the population of plankton eater fish, however, they have a positive effect on other kinds of fish. They produce nitrogen, hence, the population of some fish will increase, although the population of plankton-eaten fish will decrease.
