I believe that pets should be treated like a family member. Although it may sound quite strange for many people, however I have some reasons to argue for such claim.

First of all, deciding to have a pet means deciding to accept the responsibility of care for another living being with its all needs. Pet animals are not capable of expressing their needs and feeling the as comprehensive as humans do which means they can't literate by words.
