New Club Requirement

As part of the university’s dedication to developing students’ talents outside the classroom, the administration has decided to add a new club requirement for students in order to graduate. Students must now be members of a campus club throughout all four years in university, which will provide you with meaningful and educational experiences outside the classroom. In addition, since it is university policy to fund all university programs required for students. Because club involvement is now a requirement, students will no longer be asked to pay any club fees since the university will fund clubs directly.

Question

Explain the man’s opinion of the change and the reasons he gives for holding that opinion.

W: Hey, Tim. How are you?
M: Not bad. But, did you hear about the new club requirement?
W: No. What’s going on?
M: The school is going to require all students to be involved in at least one club during their four years at school.
W: Wow, I can’t believe it.
M: Yeah, everyone is talking about it. Most of us think it’s a terrible idea. It’s totally unfair. The university has no right to tell me how to use my free time. I have 5 classes and all of them require a lot of work. So now, when I finish my schoolwork, I can’t even get out of the area to relax; I have to stay on campus to be part of a club. It’s crazy.
W: But, don’t you think it might be good to get students more involved in campus activities?
M: Not this way. Did you know that the school is going to start using money from our tuition to support the clubs? That money should be going towards things we really need such as more computers for the computer labs and more books in our libraries, not clubs.
