The lecture is about diffusion, a cultural process, in which customs, different types of food, inventions and the like are spread through different groups or societies. This can happen by military conquers, satellite TV shows, tourism, and the like. The professor brings up two examples to illustrate this. First, she states that newspapers’ printed word invented in Germany and its paper is devised in China and both are shared across the culture until they arrived to the US. So diffusion can happen in a long distance and a long period of time. Secondly, diffusion can be selective such as acupuncture. The usage of needles by Chinese people for curing diseases is accepted in the US as an effective method but not its philosophy behind. Since the philosophy is very different from the American culture, it is not absorbed by American people.
