The author of the reading believes that human trip to Mars is impossible because of several problems. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the lecture and provides solutions that scientists have proposed.

First of all, the author points out that astronauts cannot have an adequate supply of food, water, and oxygen because spaceships have limited capacity. This point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that astronauts could use the hydroponics method to grow crops in water instead of soil. This will provide people with not only additional food but also with fresh air as the plants will release oxygen.

Secondly, the author contends that the trip to Mars and back will take at least two years, and spending that much time on the zero-gravity environment will cause serious health problems such as losing mass and bone density. The professor rebuts this argument by saying that if the astronauts will exercising enough and take vitamins they will not face these problems.

Finally, the author says that it is not possible to protect the ship from sun radiation as constructing a shield will add a lot of weight to it. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that astronauts will not be always exposed to radiations and if they do they can use a shelter that will not add extra weight to the spaceship.
