Describe jet streams by using the information in the reading, and provide examples of the way that they affect air travel by drawing on the material that you heard in the lecture.

Both passage and lecture talk about jet streams which is movement of wind at about 20000 feet above earth surface. Jet stream flows generally from west to east with an average speed of 190 miles per hour. The speed of jet stream is influenced by temperature difference between earth surface and troposphere and during winter temperature difference is more. Therefore, during winters jet streams are strong and can clock up to 300 mph.

There are two Jet Streams one in North Pole and other occurring near equator. The polar Jet stream occurs at Idaho and Montana whereas subtropical Jet stream occurs near US continent southern border. The difference in temperature near arctic and tropical region occur in small zones called fronts. The jet stream causes storms to follow its path and it occurs at fronts. Storms can move in jet streams but they last only until jet stream move out from that area.

The lecturer explains how the jet streams affect air travel. During winter polar jet stream extends up to Southern US border and sometimes up to Mexico which causes strong winds to blow up in that area. This affects Headwind and Tailwind experienced by airplane. Furthermore, to explain its effect lecturer gives an example of flight from New York to LA, tailwind causes a difference of an hour when travelling to and back from NY to LA. From NY to LA tailwind which flows in same direction as flight helps flight to reach in less time when compared to other way round. From LA to NY strong headwinds which is in opposite direction to flight path causes turbulence and requires more fuel to travel same distance.

As winter ends the jet stream recedes back to Canada causing normal flight operations. In this way jet stream affects flight path, time taken for journey. Jet stream may also cause turbulence issue and can make flight experience a bad situation.
