TPO 54 Integrated Writing Task

The author of the reading suggests three solutions for saving the Salton Sea in California in terms of reducing the level of salt in the lake's water and save fish and bird population. The professor, by contrast, states that the provided solutions are not practical and realistic.

First, the article claims that the lake could be saved by direct removal of salt through evaporation process. The professor avers that it would rereduce the salinity of water but presents some problems. For instance, the water that is pumped to the desalination facilities and evaporated would leave solid material behind. Most of these materials are composed of salt, however, it contains other chemicals which some of them are toxic-for example salinium. She declares that if these toxic material spread in the air, people breath them which is dangerous for them.

Second, the reading argues that diluting the lake's water by the Pacific Ocean's water is a solution for the problem. The professor expresses that this solution needs constructing pipelines and canals which governments may not have enough resources to support. Additionally, she says that the nearest ocean shore is about 100 kilometer away from the lake which means expensive construction is required.

Third, the article points to dividing the lake into different segments as another solution. The lecturer, however, asserts that this solving method is unlikely to work for a while and that is because the lake is located in an area with intense geographical activity. she says that the constructed walls will be destroyed in a major earthquake and as a result the water in the main segment will be mixed with the water in the smaller sections. In consequence, this solution is not practical for long times.
