TPO-21 - Integrated Writing Task Genetic modification, a process used to change an organism’s genes and hence its characteristics, is now being used to improve trees through genetic modification. It is possible to create trees that produce more fruit, g

The reading and the lecture are both about genetic modification, which is a process to change an organism's genes and its characteristics. The author of the reading believes that genetically modified trees gives a lot of help to people as well as the nature. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the reading. She says that even though, there are some benefits of using genetically modified trees, most are drawbacks.

First, the author claims that the genetically modified trees are hardier than nature trees. He believes genetically modified trees can survive in any conditions. This point is challenged by the lecturer. She says that all genetically modified tress are not resistance to all conditions. Furthermore, she points out that if a climate changes or a new insect is invaded, genetically modified trees will wipe out.

Secondly, the author states that that genetically modified trees gives more economic benefits. He argues that genetically modified trees grows much more faster and gives more yield to farmers. This argument is rebutted by the lecturer. She suggests that there are hidden costs behind growing genetically modified trees. She elaborates on this by mentioning that every time farmers plants the seeds, they need to pay the company an amount.

Finally, the author mentions that by growing genetically modified trees prevents over exploitation of wild trees. He is of the opinion that many forests around the world are being cut down faster and the genetically modified trees can replace them. The lecturer, on the other hand, feels that genetically modified trees damages the local wild trees. She puts on forth the idea that since the modified trees grow more aggressively, the wild trees are being destroyed.
