Essay topics:

In surveys Mason City residents rank water sports (swimming, boating, and fishing) among their favorite recreational activities. The Mason River flowing through the city is rarely used for these pursuits, however, and the city park department devotes little of its budget to maintaining riverside recreational facilities. For years there have been complaints from residents about the quality of the river's water and the river's smell. In response, the state has recently announced plans to clean up Mason River. Use of the river for water sports is, therefore, sure to increase. The city government should for that reason devote more money in this year's budget to riverside recreational facilities.

Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions and what the implications are for the argument if the assumptions prove unwarranted.

The plan to devote more money in the year's budget to riverside recreational facilities is feasible, however the argument is flawed and depends on few assumptions thus making it an unconvincing argument.

First of all, an assumption has been that the residents who consider water sports as one among their favorite recreational activities, also likes to participate in those activities.Maybe the residents are just interested to watch water sports and not take part in it, also there are chances that residents do not want the water sports to be conducted in the Mason river, the argument also does not state whether the residents made a request to conduct water sports on the Mason river.

Also, the argument states that there have been more complaints regarding river water's smell and river water's quality, here an assumption has been made that residents complained about river because they wanted water sports to be conducted. The argument does not specifically state whether those complaints were from residents whose favorite recreational activity is water sports.

The argument also states that more money has to be devoted to riverside recreational activities making an assumption that the current little budget is insufficient , is the current budget not enough to clean water? Is the budget sufficient enough to clean water? Is quality and smell of river water the only issue to be addressed? The argument does not provide sufficient information for these questions. Further, the author assumes that usage if river for water sports will surely increased if the river is cleaned ,but fails to explain how. Maybe the residents want the river just to be cleaned up and do not expect any activities to be held ,which might even cause negative effects on the quality and smell of the river's water.

In conclusion ,the argument depends on assumptions and lacks evidence. The argument can be more sounding and convincing if the author provides more evidence regarding what the complaints are all about, interest of the residents to take part in the water sports activities and whether the budget is sufficient enough.
