Man is a social animal by nature.Since its inception, human population has rapidly grown to cover a major part of the planet Earth. Right from the hot deserts of Sahara and Arabia to the cold wastelands of Antarctica, human presence is there in some form. As a result, it is very difficult for any human being to live in isolation in the modern world. Almost every human being growing beyond a certain age has to interact with many social groups in his lifetime. Thus, identification with social groups is an essential part of our life. Hence,it won't be inappropriate to say that we define ourselves through our interactions with vartious social groups.

In any phase of his life,a person is member of various social groups even with or without his choice.A person's life begins in the social group of his family. In the beginning of his life a person, other than his own views of himself, defines himself through the views of his family members. As his life goes on,his social circle widens and the number and diversity of social groups increases as well. For example,A student is a part of the social group of his class, the sub-social group of his school friends, the social group of his neighbour friends and the social group of his family as well. Since the social groups are an inevitable part of a person's life, they are bound to affect a person's personality and character as well as his definition of himself.

A person's defintion of himself keeps subtely changing for a major part of his life based on his interaction with various social groups. The chief reason for such a phenomenon is man's adaptibile nature to changing conditions. It is the nature-gifted trait of adaptibility that has made humans a dominant species on the planet. It has been man's adaptibility to changing climatic and demographic conditions that has made him survive over centuries. Interaction with a new social group also represents a change in existing conditions for a person. This change can be compared to a climatic change which can make a person take appropriate steps to adapt and align with the climate. In the same way, a person tends to adapt so as to fit into a particular role in the new social group in which he has to belong. Such adaptation results in the subtle changes in personality which accunulate through more such interactions and tend to define a person as a whole.

A student in school may be the best in sports among his peer group. However,if a such a student goes to a sports college where many good sportsmen from different cities have enrolled, he may not find himself at the top sportsman of his peer group. This might stimulate him to work harder inorder to get to the top or may also influence him negatively by filling him with despair. In the first situation, he may go out of his bounds and become a better sportsman, in the second his performance may dip below his personal average. This situation showes that how an interaction with a new social group can affect a person's definition.

Summing up,a man's personality is shaped by various incidents in his lifetime. Interacting with different social groups constitutes a major part of life, hence it is safe to say that "It is primarily through our identification with social groups that we define ourselves."
