Politicians should pursue common ground and reasonable consensus rather than elusive ideals.

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, describe specific circumstances in which adopting the recommendation would or would not be advantageous and explain how these examples shape your position.

The goal of most politicians is to create lasting improvements in his country. The topic raises the controversial issue whether this should be achieved by pursuing common grounds, or instead seemingly inachievable ideals. Indisputably, some Ideals may indeed seem unachievable, nevertheless, without pursuing such there is no progress of society. Would the grounding fathers of america have pursued common ground with great Britain, the Unites States would probably not be the country it is today. Hence, even elusive Ideals must be pursued sometimes to fight for a better world.

First of all, this issue can also be seen from another view-point. Evolution versus monotony. While it is understandable, and in some scenarios appropriate to pursue monotony, such as during times of peace and harmony, one must not be deluded by such times, as until today none has lasted forever. In fact, an example of such a situation is the danger that the western world is facing at the moment. The rise of China, and their aggressive behaviour make it a necessity to pursue our own ideals.

Instead, politicians in the United States are mostly pursuing common ground over ideals. This leads to minor steps, such as the gun restrictions Obama has fought for during the eight years of his presidency. Trump easily reverted those, and hence Obama failed to create the lasting changes he aimed for. Would he had been more absolute, fighting stronger for the ideal of gun free states, more lives could have been saved.

This policy of minor steps, resulting from the fear of taking risks, is exactly what places our ideals in a dangerous position against the rising threat in the east. And threats like this have always existed, and will always continue to exist. While we are not in a war with china in common sense, an economical war is rising, and just as the founding fathers of the United States, it will be necessary to pursue even elusive ideals, in an opposition to the elusive ideas that other countries pursue.

Finally there is no improvement without ideals to pursue. While one could argue, that the very idea of democracy is the pursue of common ground, this does not correlate to politicians in general, and does not contradict it either. With an ever-increasing controversy in politics, the progress by following such an approach of common grounds decreases, and in fact will create even more controversy in a democracy, as people tend to meander ever further without a common goal to pursue. Hence ideals, may they seem yet so elusive, must always be tried to achieve, as not doing so, would mean to give up our values and give up our dreams.
