Overall, there was a dramatic decrease in the percentage of women giving birth to their first child when they were under 24, while the figures for women who were over 25 years old witnessed a significant increase. In addition, over 40-year-old females consistently had the lowest proportion of women giving birth to their first child.
About over 60% of Australian women, who were 19 to 24 years old, gave birth to their baby in 1966, with a subsequent decline to roughly 37% in 1986 and a final drop to shy of 30% at the end of the period. The figure for under 19-year-old females saw a similar change, but to a lesser extent, which started at around 33%, after which it experienced a reduction to precisely 20% in 1986 before ending the period at just over 10%.
The percentages of women who were 25 to 30 years old and 30 to 34 years old when they gave birth to their child were at about 35% and 12%, followed by dramatic increases before ending the period at roughly 38% and 45% respectively. Similarly, the figures for 34 to 39-year-old and over 40-year-old women started at just under 10% and around 3%, reaching its peak at 30% and 7% in that order.
