Overall, it is evident from the given chart that income disparity in Japan was by far highest in comparison with the relatively smaller numbers of Australia and the UK. Besides, while four out of five countries witnessed a decrease in terms of salary gap, that of Australia increased in the last decade examined.
In 1978, income difference between men and women in Japan was around 48 per cent, which was much larger than the US, the UK by nearly 10 per cent and doubled that of the remaining nations. These thereafter followed by a steady fall over 2 decade period.
In 1998, the percentage of income gap in Japan continued to decline to just above 40 per cent after a decade. Likewise, a downward trend was also observed in the UK, the US, and France when they went down by about 2 percent. However, that of Australia suddenly increased in 1998 and overtook the proportion of salary disparity in France before reaching about 25 per cent in the last stage.
