The bar chart depicts the proportion of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.
In 1918, the percentage who rented houses was far greater than the people who owned houses which accounted for 78%. During the period from 1939 to 1953, the proportion of people renting houses was constant at 68% which then decreased gradually to 30% by 2001 before rising slightly to 37% by 2011.
The least percentage of 22% who owned houses in two areas was in 1918. This number increased steadily to 69% by 2001 although there was a slight dip to 65% in 2011. Moreover, this was the highest percentage of people with the ownership to the house. Interestingly, the proportion of people who owned and rented houses were equal in 1971.
It can be concluded that preference of people to own a house has increased than renting a house over time.
