In 1980, 40% of Australian men were over heavy and it rose slightly to about 50% in 1990. Even though the figures swelled sharply in 2000 of about 65%, it went down modestly to over 60% at the end of the period.
In contrast, the percentage of women, who were overweight, were lower than males. However, there was a steep rise in the proportion of overweight females from just 30% at the beginning of the period to approximately 45% in 1990. In 2000, this number was a significant increase to 50% and then stayed at the same level in 2010.
