The diagram illustrates the working of hydroelectric power station used for producing electricity.

Mainly, the hydroelectric station does the work of generating electricity from the flowing water. Also, the water used in the process can be reused.

Firstly, water from primary sources like rivers are stored using dams. The power stations are generally set up at a level below them. So, the stored water does the job of high-level reservoir. From this level, it is easier to facilitate the flow of water downwards.

These high level reservoirs are open during day time allowing the water flow to power station. Whereas at night the reservoirs close down preventing any downstream flow. The water is taken to the turbine through pipes or tubes and its force causes the turbine t rotate. This turbine is connected with the generator, which as a result of rotation generates electricity. It is further carried to national grids through power lines.

The water having passed the turbine is conserved in a low-level reservoir. This turbine rotates in reverse direction at night, basically acting as a pump. It pumps the water back into the high level reservoir completing a cycle and making at reusable.
