The diagrams below show the development of the horse over a period of 40 million years. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The picture illustrates the four evolutionary phases of the horse over the period of 40 years. Overall, it is apparent that the modern horse is significantly bigger than its ancestors and there is the gradual disappearance of its toes.
The initial horse was examined to live 40 million years ago and named Eohippus, and this is also considered to have the smallest size among four stages. In the comparison with the first phase, Mesohippus, which was found 10 million years later, shows some semblance of a mane. Circa 15 million years ago, the Merychippus appeared, and at this prehistoric stage, it largely resembled the modern horse. Eventually, the horse today gets taller with a fully formed mane on the neck.
The foot structure exhibits remarkable changes as well. The foot of the initial species was slender with five distinct digits. Compared with the earliest stage, Eohippus and Mesohippus had fewer toes, only three and the latter horse shows a more prominent middle digit. Finally, the latest species has sole hoof and developed joints.
