The line graph shows information about the number of birth and death in New Zealand since 1901 with predictions until 2101.
Overall, the birth rate has increased since the start of the period, and then is predicted to decrease over the years. The death rate started at a lower level, showed an upward trend with expectations for overtaking the birth rate in 2041.
Between 1901 and the present day, the birth rate has been consistently higher than the death rate. It began at 20 000 and increased to a peak of 66 000 in 1961. Then the rate has fluctuated widely between 65 and 50 thousand and it’s predicted to decline steadily to around 45 000 births by the end of the period.
In contrast, the number of deaths stood at below 9 000 and has increased slowly until the present time. This increase is forecasted to be more rapid between 2021 and 2061 when the rate will level off at around 60 000.
